Summer Musings: Beat the Heat & Play

It's HOT, y'all. Across the globe temperatures are hitting record highs. 2024 is the hottest year on record so far. As we work hard to scale climate solutions globally, work for policy change, and create sustainability in our communities, it's also important to get outside.

I've escaped to the mountains for some relief from the heat (yes, we are wearing jackets) and for some much needed rest.

How are YOU beating the heat? As you consider the steps you're taking, it's important to fully appreciate that the people who are contributing the least amount of carbon pollution are suffering the most. Access to electricity, to air conditioning and for heating will become an essential, life-sustaining necessity soon.

Check out this potentially life-saving advice from Sharecare about how to take precautions.

While I process all the emotions that come from these extreme weather events, I'm also creating space for joy and for reflection. As we "feel at the feels,"remember that joy is contagious. The law of amplification, which I write about in my book, means sharing joy reverberates in your community. Here are some of my summer musings:

 What I'm reading:

  •  Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler- this national bestseller was published in 1993 and is set in 2025. Climate is front and center in this sci-fi, fantasy solarpunk tale of how ultimately community will save us. It's an intense, brilliant read.

  • The Impact Series by CK Westbrook- a sci-fi about Space Force, aliens, corruption and guns. A page turning series from Corry Westbrook.

  • Glacial: The Inside Story of Climate Politics by Chelsea Henderson. This must-read compelling (and frustrating story) about how we are where we are with climate policy comes out August 6th.

My latest #onegreenthings:

  •  Menu planning and storing all my leftovers in glass containers at eye-level as shown in this reel from the dynamic, sustainability content creator Alyssa Barber Alyssa B. on IG.

  • Using the Give Green website to support candidates across the country that support strong climate action. Thanks League of Conservation Voters !

  • Hiking, camping, and kayaking at our local Hyalite reservoir and putting down my phone.

Here's to a restful summer!
